I have always been a huge fan of multitasking beauty products … Anything that helps to make my beauty routine quicker and less complicated is a major plus for me! Let’s just say I like to look good but I don’t really want to put a huge amount of time and effort into getting there! So for years I’ve been using tinted moisturizers that include SPF to get a three in one step that covers my moisturizer, foundation (sheer coverage) and sun protection in my morning beauty/makeup routine. Since, I was comfortable with my tinted moisturizers, I didn’t really jump onto the BB Cream bandwagon even though I always wanted to (I’m a bit of a creature of habit). So as my last tinted moisturizer was running out I decided to finally take the plunge … Why use a ‘3 in 1’ product when I can use a ‘5 in 1’ product!
BB creams usually have a stronger SPF than tinted moisturizers, which will be needed in the upcoming Spring/Summer months here in Cape Town, as I hope to be spending much more time outdoors! Also they often provide anti-aging properties which is something that needs to be considered at my age (thirty one). I was previously using the tinted moisturizer by Smashbox, so after reading some reviews I decided to try out the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream instead.
Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream has an SPF of 35 where most tinted moisturizers only have SPF15 so it definitely is better for sun protection. It also boasts to “PRIME, PERFECT, HYDRATE, and CONTROL OIL in a single step”. As for anti-aging, it claims to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles after 4 weeks. I have been using it for about 4 weeks now, but since I don’t have any real visible fine lines or wrinkles yet and I basically want the anti-aging properties as more of a preventative measure, I can’t tell you whether or not it holds up to that promise. It does feel moisturizing on my face though and I haven’t suffered from any major breakouts since I started using it, so I would say ‘check’ for ‘HYDRATE’ and it seems to be keeping the oil under control. As a primer, I really like the way it holds under my makeup. I prefer to wear it alone, but you can use foundation over it if you would like more coverage. I apply it to my lids and under my eyes, and find it to work well as a primer for my eye shadow and concealer, as well as for the rest of the makeup I use on my face.
As you can see below the consistency is quite thick, but blends well and doesn’t feel heavy on my face … which is important to me. It leaves a light coverage that evens out my skin tone and is slightly buildable, but if you want full coverage you will have to use a foundation over it. I also really like that it has a slightly luminous finish but doesn’t make my skin look oily or greasy.
Unfortunately it only comes in six shades (fair, light, light medium, medium, and dark) which I think is a huge drawback for a lot of potential customers … They really should have a larger variety of shades! However, for my skin tone (I am NC30) the shade ‘light’ worked perfectly and that was one of the reasons I decided to buy it in the first place. On the last swatch on my hand you can see that when its almost fully blended in, it wouldn’t be possible to see where the cream starts and ends if it wasn’t for the slightly luminous effect.
Overall I think the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream did exactly what the name promises for me… It made me feel ‘Camera Ready’! However, at R390 ($45) at Woolworths it is not the cheapest BB Cream out there, which would make anybody think twice about purchasing it unless it’s absolutely perfect! But I am a believer in getting what you pay for when it comes to skincare and since it has been doing exactly what I want it to do, I find it to be worth the price for me. However I do plan on trying out other BB creams, including some drug store brands before deciding whether or not I will repurchase this one. If you guys have any suggestions, please let me know in the comments below and I will keep you posted on the ones I try and my results.
