So I’m sure that by now most of you have heard about Stila Cosmetics and their recent launch here in South Africa … and if you haven’t, you can find the ‘who, what, where’ on them in my recent post ‘So Many New Lust-Worthy Beauty Brands Entering Cape Town … Here’s the Lowdown on Them!’. If you have read that post than you would know that I was especially excited about Stila’s launch here because I’ve been a fan of theirs from way back when I lived in Canada. So at the first chance I could get, I had to rush out and get my hands on some of the products they launched! The first two products I purchased were their In The Moment Eye Shadow Palette and their Custom Color Blush in Self Adjusting Coral and here are my reviews for them. 🙂
Since I love playing with eye makeup and I can never have enough eye shadow, I knew that I had to try one of Stila’s eye shadow palettes which each consist of ten of Stila’s ‘award winning’ eye shadows that can be worn wet or dry and come with a Smudge Stick Water Proof Eyeliner. The palettes are thin, sleek and light and made of a cardboard type of material (which you wouldn’t expect at R395 , but I would rather they compromise on the palette itself than on the quality and/or quantity of the product included.) There were three palettes available at Truworths; the In The Light Palette which consists of mostly neutral shades, the In The Garden Palette which consist of ‘botanical inspired’ shades, and the one I decided to buy; the In The Moment Palette.
The palettes don’t come with mirrors, but at least they have nice inspirational quotes in its place!
The In The Moment Eye Shadow Palette has three shades of purple, some neutral shades, and two highlighter shades. Most of the shades have bit of shimmer and can be combined to make some gorgeous, ‘evening out’ smoky eye looks; making this a great palette for the festive season coming up! … Which is one of the reasons I decided to buy it! Another reason I chose this palette is because purple shades generally compliment hazel and green eyes well and thus work well for me … and also for the simple reason that the colours are just so pretty and fun!
The colours on the top row seem to compliment each other to create sultry ‘night out on the town’ looks, while the bottom row consist of more neutral shades for more daytime appropriate looks. If you also look at each row vertically, you can see that aside from the first row on the left (which is just two highlighter shades), the colours seem to be aligned with the shades that will compliment them the most. For example: These two shades ‘glance’ (which is more of a rich purple than is showing in this picture) and ‘spontaneous’ would look really good together!
These are swatches of all the colours. (I took the pictures in natural day light without a flash.)
In the swatches you can kind of see the shimmer in the shades more than you can in the picture of the palette above … I love how shimmery ‘Instinct’ (the first one in the top picture, ‘Impulse’ (the second one in the top picture), ‘Desire’ (the first one in the bottom picture) and ‘Spontaneous’ (the third one in the bottom picture) are! ‘Catalyst’, the last shade in the top picture looks like a matte black in the picture but it actually has little flecks of gold in it. I’m happy with the amount of pigment in all the shades … The lighter shades seem to be more pigmented than the darker shades, which I like because I’d rather build on less colour than start with too much colour.
In case you are unsure about which colours to use and where to use them, the palette includes a mini look book that has instructions on how to get each look. I thought that was a nice bonus! Also, all the eye shadows are labelled with the name of the shade on the palette so you know which ones to use.
The Smudge Stick Water Proof Eyeliner is in the colour ‘Tetra’, a smoky shimmery purple. I thought it is a really nice alternative to the regular black eyeliner for a smoky look and it works well with most of the colour combinations you would use in this palette.
Although it is called a ‘Smudge Stick’, you definitely have to smudge it as soon as you put it on because once it dries it is actually quite smudge-proof!… I tried smudging it about a minute after I put it on and it would not budge at all. It is also indeed waterproof … I know this because I forgot to use makeup remover on my arm to take it off when I was finished taking the pictures and I realised it was still there in the morning! I also fell in love with the colour and I love the bit of shimmer it has … and yes, I am really into shimmer right now … I think it’s the season!
Now onto the Custom Color Blush in Self Adjusting Coral … I bought it because I’ve heard so many rave reviews about it and I was actually looking for a nice coral blush for summer.
It comes in a small plastic compact, which again looks a little cheap-ish for the price (R200), but luckily the product … which is what actually matters … does make up for that! It’s a peachy coral shade with a very slight hint of gold shimmer (which makes it perfect for summer!) that claims to be a ‘one-shade-fits-all blush’ by ‘self-adjusting’ according to the wearer’s PH levels and ‘harmonizing’ with each person’s skin tone. While I can’t vouch for whether or not it adjusts to every person’s skin tones, I can say it does blend perfectly with mine and it gave me a nice flushed look. I also find that it is a pretty unique shade, being not too peach or too pink.
It is very pigmented so it’s best to apply lightly and build on it as you need it. Also, it needs to be blended well to make sure you don’t get a patchy look. (The swatch on my arm is blended a bit).
Overall I am very happy with both of these purchases … While the In The Moment Eye Shadow Palette is a bit on the pricy side, it does include ten gorgeous quality shades of eye shadow that can be worn in an endless array of combinations for day and/or night … and it comes with a gorgeous uniquely coloured eyeliner! I also think that the look book that is included is perfect for anyone who is not sure about how to combine the colours … or for those days when you just don’t want to put any thought into matching your makeup! The Custom Colour Blush works perfectly for my skin tone, and I find it to be the perfect colour for summer! 🙂
For the purpose of this review (and because it just seemed like a fun thing to do!), I tried the look below from the mini look book …
And this is what is looked like on me … paired with the Self Adjusting Coral blush of course.
