During the spring/summer fashion weeks this hair trend was seen all over runways and recently it’s being spotted more and more on celebrities! The ‘slicked back’ hair style is so effortless yet chic and has become one of Spring/Summer 2012’s hottest hair trends! This style is a great way to bring out your eyes and cheek bones without putting your hair in a ponytail or updo. I personally love it because I get bored of hairstyles easily and there’s only so much of switching your part from a middle part to a side part and back to a middle part that you can do … with this style there’s no part! The look is reminiscent of when you come out of the pool with wet hair and push it straight back to get it out of your face … which I love right now because it reminds me of summer and I’m oh so tired of our rainy winter days here in Cape Town right now!
So first I’ll show you how it was done on the models on the Spring/Summer runways. It doesn’t look very wearable on them but there is a wearable way to do it as you can see on the celebs below them
And here’s how the celebs have been wearing the look recently:
Alicia Keys (It looks great with her ombre hair colour!)
(No matter how wrong she gets it in her personal life … She always seems to get it right with her hair!)
Kim Kardashian (again)
Kat Graham (as seen at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards)
Jada Pinket Smith
To get the look:
Dry your hair as you normally would without creating volume at the ends. Either dry it completely straight or with slight natural looking waves.
If you would like some volume on the crown like Alicia Keys, Kim Kardashian, Jada Pinket Smith and Penelope Cruz, you will need to tease it a bit. (Here’s some tips on how to get volume in 5 minutes if you don’t have time to wash it.) If you would like to keep it flat and sleek like Kat Graham and Megan Fox then skip this step.
Apply some gel or shine serum to the roots of your hair pushing it back out of your face as you would if you were tying it in a ponytail and stop at the end of your crown. If you don’t want it to have any shine and prefer a mat look like Alicia Keys and Kat Graham you can use mouse instead. Then run a comb through it to neaten it out and give it a sleek finish.
To finish brush out the ends.
Tricks to getting the look right and keeping it wearable like the celebs do :
Make sure you don’t have too much volume on the ends of your hair to avoid having it look like a ‘mullet’ or ‘hat head’.
Don’t overdo it with the gel so that your hair doesn’t end up looking dirty and/or greesy.
If you have thin hair, avoid making it too flat and make sure that your scalp does not show through.
