Ombre Hair for Summer!:)

Ombre Hair for Summer!:)

The Ombre hair trend has been around for a long while now … almost too long to consider it just a trend anymore … and rightfully so because it is such a universally flattering look that compliments almost anyone since you can wear it long or short and in a huge array of tones and colours.  To top it off, it is quite low maintenance since you don’t have to worry about touching up your roots very often! Personally, I love to lighten my hair in the summer because I just feel like  lighter hair usually looks nicer with summer  fashion and makeup trends.  Also, it gives the hair more dimension and makes it look more ‘sun kissed’ … So I decided what better way to lighten my hair for summer, than to try the Ombre trend on itSmile.

I’ve been wanting to try this look for a long time now but I don’t DIY when it comes to hair dye (I think I have phobia that I’ll burn all my hair off or something) and I’ve moved so many times in the last few years (five cities, in three countries in three years!) that I haven’t been able to find a hairdresser that I could trust enough to try new things with.  (I had the same hairdresser for eight years in Toronto before I moved so that might explain my paranoia to try new stylists.) But now that it’s summer I decided that I really didn’t want to put it off anymore, so last week I made an appointment with a local salon called Expressions Hair Salon located in Constantia Courtyard and I finally took the plunge!

I saved a bunch of pictures of what I wanted it to look like before I went to the salon, but I forgot to upload them to my phone!! So I quickly scrounged through magazines at the salon and spent a while discussing the style with the stylist before she started the look on me.

I wanted to try something like this …

But the beautiful stylist named Delia told me that since my hair is quite dark, making the ends so blond will be too damaging to them.  Instead she suggested we do more subtle highlights on the lower half of my hair to get the effect without the damage.  I respected her opinion since she is a professional and was grateful that she saved me from the great amount of damage that I could have done to my hair! She also suggested that if I still want the look in a few months I could go lighter then, because gradually lightening it over a period of time won’t be as damaging … Which is exactly what I plan on doing!Smile

So instead we decided that I should do something more like this …

And this is what it ended up looking like:

Definitely ALOT more subtle than what I wanted but at least my hair didn’t get too damaged in the process, and I definitely plan on adding more colour to the ends in December. In the meantime, at least I still got some more dimension for summer which is what I was looking for.

Your hair looks so beautiful!! I would also love to dye my hair but sm scared of the damage it does. I use a Loreal colour rinse shampoo to give my hair a reddish shine when I stand in the sun.

Thank you so much Desle!!:) To be honest I play around with my hair colour all the time, but I always get it done at a salon … I never DIY it … As long as you don’t lighten it too much at once you don’t have to worry about it getting too damaged because in order to lighten it you have to bleach it, which is what causes the most damage. Also if you make sure the hair dye used is a good quality, reputable hair dye and the hairdresser knows what they are doing, colouring your hair once in a while shouldn’t be too damaging. But a colour rinse shampoo sounds like a really good idea to get some colour in your hair without the commitment! … Maybe I’ll try that another time!:)
